Dissecting Liberty’s primary goal is to understand the concept of liberty as deeply and fully as possible. Our secondary goal is to develop our members into both social and thought leaders. We accomplish this through rigorous logic and reason gained through group discussion, debate, dialectics, presentation, and reading. We hold a weekly book club, Bi-weekly prompt-led discussions, and monthly special events. We also are creating a growing network of organizations, figures, and opportunities that we will extend to our members.

Why is it important to understand liberty more deeply?

Every individual values their freedom but do we really know what that means?

Do we define freedom in the negative? Freedom from something, freedom from coercion, freedom from constraints. Or is it defined positively? Freedom to act in some way, freedom to think how you want. Can freedom be sacrificed? When should it be sacrificed?

Freedom is important, it is valued, but what freedom means is not as clear as we may think. Libertarians and Marxists, Conservatives and Socialists, Anarchists, all fight for freedom yet each would say the other does not.  Different conceptions of liberty means different applications of the concept, it means it serves different functions, holds different utility, etc. By better understanding your own and others’ conception of liberty we will better be able to understand each other and fully realize what it is we are truly trying to attain.
