General Elections
Students’ Union Board of Directors and Senate Student Representatives are students who have been elected by the student population in a General Election.
The General Election is held annually, typically in February/March, and is overseen by the Chief Returning Officer (CRO).
Three primary election activities are:
- nominations
- campaigning
- polling
Nominations
To become a candidate for election, a person must be nominated and any UBC-O student is eligible. Candidates must have 15 other UBC-O students nominate them by signing the candidates nomination form.
Campaigning
Once a candidate has been approved by the CRO, they may then campaign with-in the designated campaign period. Campaigning might include posters, online media and face-to-face contact with students. Discussions and debate sessions are organized to learn more about the candidates and a chance to ask them questions.
Polling
At the end of the campaign period, the student body votes on each position where applicable. At the time of polling, students will be given a ballot with the candidates’ names on it and can vote once for each position. Once the ballots are counted, the successful candidate is the person who wins a simple majority of the votes.
