On September 25, the SUO Community Meals program made a strong debut on campus with the launch of its free breakfast and lunch initiative at the Picnic, located on the first floor of the UNC building. The initiative is already drawing attention for the sense of connection and belonging it brings to the UBCO community.
The programme is led by the UBCO Students’ Union (SUO), represented by VP External Olivia Lai and the SUO Campaigns Committee, in partnership with UBC’s Picnic. Picnic is more than a kitchen; it’s a wellbeing space that encourages food literacy, sustainability, and community building. Together, SUO and Picnic have designed a program that nourishes the UBCO community.
Every Wednesday, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., and Thursday, from 12 to 1:30 p.m., students, staff, and faculty gather to share a meal prepared with care. The goal is to create a space where people dine, network, and be a part of the larger UBCO Community. The gatherings often include games, cultural exchanges, and conversations that highlight the diversity of UBCO’s campus life.
Since its launch, more than 1,000 meals have been served, a milestone that reflects the growing appetite for meaningful connection on campus. The menu celebrates global flavours while keeping sustainability at its core. Participants are encouraged to bring their own containers to reduce waste and support environmentally friendly habits.
