Semester in Review: Fall 2023

EXPO 2023

On September 20th we had our annual EXPO that features the 140+ SUO Clubs and Course Unions to spread the word about what they are doing, and introduce themselves to potential new members! We also invite campus and community partners like SVPRO, GEO, Big White Ski Resort, Quail Ridge Dental and more!

FROSH 2023

On September 22nd we welcomed Sheck Wes, Felix Cartal and FRVR Friday to campus for the FROSH Concert! It is always fun to see students enjoying themselves at this event and start the new school year on a fun note

Events at The Well Student Pub

We have had such a fun semester of events at the SUO’s very own on-campus pub- The Well!

Some of this semester’s Well Events include:

  • TRIVIA NIGHTS: The Well hosted bi-weekly trivia nights including Harry Potter, Pixar, Taylor Swift, Marvel and FRIENDS!
  • Boo’s and Brushes Paint Night: We brought back wine and paint nights this semester for Halloween and it was a huge success! Look out for more of these in the new year

Launch of $5 Smart Meals Campaign

Smart Meals is a campaign created and championed by our VP External Lakshay Karnwal, offering meals to students to purchase at restaurants in the UNC Building for only $5. This campaign has three main pillars:

  • Food Security and Affordability
  • Mental Health
  • Sustainability

UBCO Recreation Fieldhouse Referendum

In partnership with UBCO Recreation, The SUO ran a referendum for students to vote on whether or not the proposal for a new gym facility called The Fieldhouse would be approved. This was a necessary addition to campus because while UBCO’s population has grown, the gym facilities have stayed the same. After the referendum was voted on, we found out it had passed! The Fieldhouse will be a reality in the next few years.

Cultural Events at Picnic

This semester the crew over at The SUO Pantry Foodbank took it upon themselves to host some fun and inclusive cultural events for Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) and Diwali. These were both such fun events that celebrated diversity and acted as an educational opportunity for other students to learn about celebrations from other cultures.

Annual General Meeting 2023

At our Annual General Meeting on November 23rd, we had an amazing turnout of students who wanted to come to exercise their right to vote and bring their own ideas and concerns to the SUO Executives.

There were various bylaw changes as well as the usual presentation from the Executives and our auditor.
